During our first stop in Sydney when promoting Greek wines for the first time in Australia (read about it here) we had the lovely opportunity to bump into a lovely tasting of 28 Pinots from around the globe that took place in Prince Wine Store.

Starting with Australian examples we loved the freshness of Epis Pinot Noir 2013 from high-altitude, cool region of Macedon Ranges and the supple, oaked, somehow leathery character of Kooyong Pinot Noir 2012 from Mornington Peninsula. Moorooduc wines by Richard McIntyre were also consistent with the juicy red berry supple style showing more complexity in the Devil Bend Creek and Graden Vineyard 2012 labels.

The Mac Forbes Yarra Valley 2014 was impressive and exciting wine with 10% whole bunches, indigenous fermentation and maturation in old oak. The wine showed definitely an elegant tone highlighted by freshness and crispy acidity. Another winner was the spectacular Tolppuddle 2013 from Tasmania, a venture by Michael Hill Smith MW that James Halliday describes as a winery born with blue blood. Soils there are silica over sandstone giving a floral, bright in fruit wine with depth of fruit and long finish.

Moving on to New Zealand, it was not too hard to navigate between the sweet fruit (even cherry lollipop sometimes) and round style of Martinborough to the structured and very Burgundian one from Central Otago. Escarpment Kupe 2012 was very exotic maybe lacking a bit in intensity, yet its peppery style was very fine and Ata Rangi 2013 again from Martinborough was restrained on the nose yet exploded on the palate. Our favourite one, was however Burn Cottage 2013, a rock n'roll wine with firm structure, dense dark fruit, full of layers and promises of more complexity when mature.

Charteris The Winter Vineyard 2012 from Central Otago was complex and rewarding especially on the palate and the winemaker who was present during the tasting gave us a good insight on the region. Did you know by the way that they acidify the Pinots in Otago?

Finally out of the 3 Burgundies the Jean-Luc Burguet Vosne Romannee 2012 stood out by its refined yet structured personality.
